I don’t think we can conceive of a photographic workshop with a general theme; everyone has their own characteristics, inclinations, aptitudes, and we will try to work on these, without hierarchies and preconceptions. I do not want to propose a method or a style and this will not be a technical workshop: the only concern will be to understand more about ourselves by developing a unique and original visual language that identifies with what we have the urge to express. Each participant will be followed and treated in an exclusive and personal way, without comparisons or expectations with reference to the needs and abilities of others. We should try to remove comfortable points of reference, and make the effort to confront ourselves in an immediate way, photographing accordingly. Photography should not be a technical-stylistic device to hide behind, but a simple and direct means of being in communion with what we love. A street, a wall, a body, a story, a person, ourselves, all these things together-whatever you prefer. I have never found interest in cataloging: referring to journalistic, social, personal, nude, landscape, portrait etc. photography means absolutely nothing if it is limited to its formal aspect. The only thing that matters is the care and emotional tension that one puts into what one does; beautiful photographs are such insofar as they are true, authentic, and they become so, more or less, to the extent that one tends to the truth we have inside, without filters, each one indulging one’s different nature until it is transformed into vision.
Lorenzo Castore was born in Florence on June 22, 1973.In 1981 he moved to Rome with his mother. In 1992 lives for six months in New York and begins to photograph in the streets; then he returns to Rome and studies photography and Law. Photographs for a long time Termini railway station and a gipsy camp in Rome. Continues to photograph in New York. In 1997 goes to Himachal Pradesh, India: first show at Galleria Minerva 5, Rome. In 1999 after his degree in Law goes to Albania and Kosovo where he documents the life of elderly Serbians imprisoned in an orthodox monastery under siege. First trip to Silesia, Poland. In 2000 back to Poland and to Uttar Pradesh, India. Silesia show Szczesc Boze (God be with you!) at the Polish Institute of Culture, Rome then in Warsaw, Katowice, Gliwice, Zurich, Milan, Krakow and Carbonia. In 2001 again to India, Poland and New York. Babylon, New York exhibition at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Rome and Pantha Rei Gallery, Munich.He is represented by Grazia Neri Agency. Starts a long term collaboration with Gregotti Associati International documenting the construction of many buildings and the Arcimboldi Theatre in Milan.In 2001-2 after two long stays in Havana realizes the series Paradiso. Starts to document the work ofthe sculptor Giuseppe Spagnulo.In 2003 joins Galerie and Agence VU. Begins to work on the Nero project in Sulcis, south western Sardinia.Wins the Mario Giacomelli Award. P-Zero campaign, book and erxhibition at the Permanente Museum,Milan for Pirelli. Partecipates in collective shows in Italy and abroad. Paradiso slide-show is projected atthe Rencontres d’Arles, in Brussels, Buenos Aires, Catania, Piacenza, Paris, Krakow. Paradiso show atGrazia Neri Gallery, Milan and at Galerie VU, Paris. Starts giving workshops regularly.In 2004 Nero exhibition at Milan’s Palazzo Reale and in Carbonia and Krakow; Nero book is published byFederico Motta Editore.In 2005 works in Italy, France, Spain, Poland and Germany. Wins the Leica European Publishers’ Awardand Paradiso book is published in 6 countries.In 2006 he was in Italy, Germany, France, Poland and Croatia. Starts to edit years of work about therelation between his own story and History, a sort of sentimental education through photography. The project will be titled Present Tense. Fnac Italy produces the first step of this long term work presenting The ground under your feet exhibition, a selection of portraits. Paradiso exhibitions at the Rencontres d’Arles, Leica Gallery in Solms, Photokina, Cologne and in 2007 at Envy Gallery, Frankfurt and at MaiMano’ House of Photography, Budapest.In 2007 he was in Poland, Hungary, Italy, Germany and Greece.Exhibition at Anima Art Gallery, Krakow and at Yours Gallery, Warsaw with the title Rece do gory! (Handsup!). Starts to photograph middle aged brother and sister Ewa and Piotr Sosnowski.In 2008 continues to be in Poland with them.In 2009 Notebook show in Rome. Photographic campaigns for Medecins du Monde and for NIKE.In 2011 starts to document the construction of buildings by Zaha Hadid, Arata Isozaki and Daniel Libeskind in the area of the former International fair of Milan. Continues to work on both the film and the book „No Peace Without War” and on Present Tense. Completes his work Ultimo Domicilio that is then presented in a HD animation projection with original music composed by Emanuele de Raymondi in Rome, Athens and Thessaloniki.In 2012 photographs the space of the Caserma Cavalli in Turin for Holden School of story-telling. The medium length film „No Peace Without War” is presented in competition at the Visions du Reel International Film Festival in Nyon, CH, at the Krakow Film Festival, PL, at Camerimage Film Festival, PL where won the Golden Frog for Best Short Documentary.In 2013 presents the project Sogno #5, a foto-roman with some bipolar patients shot in the former Mental Institution Leonardo Bianchi in Naples. The Polish Institute of Rome produces and presents a retrospective exhibition of the Poland years, from 1999 till 2013. Notebook II exhibition for FotoGrafia International Festival of Photography in Rome. Photographic campaign for Enel. Through the years his work was published by Rolling Stone, D, Io Donna, Ventiquattro, Amica, Le Monde 2, Liberation, Internazionale, Sportweek, Sette, L’Espresso, Sunday Telegraph, Die Zeit, Die Welt, Snob Magazine among the others.
